Think about your immune system as your firewall. Its job is to detect a wide variety of agents, called pathogens, like viruses and bad bacteria for example, and then distinguish them from your own healthy tissue.
Our immune system has a couple of layers of defenses in the event that those pathogens come knocking. We won’t get into a deep scientific talk here, instead, let’s keep it simple. When virus or bacteria is trying to enter an organism, in this case, you, for example, you will notice your immune system fighting back.
You might cough or sneeze, your nose might start running, your body’s temperature might rise, or you might notice inflammation which means increased blood flow to an area in trouble.
Some layers of defense we can’t see… For example, your gastric acid will fight ingested pathogens, while white blood cells will track pathogens through contact and kill microorganisms in the blood.
So, are you sick or tired all the time? Well, your immune system is working hard to fight pathogens. Of course, like any other health issue, prevention is the best treatment.
But before we talk about ways to support a strong immune system, let’s talk about some of the reasons your immune system might be weak.
Why is My Immune System Weak?
The first thing to consider is, of course, your diet. Do you eat a lot of packaged, ready-made foods, low in nutritional value? Do you drink a lot of sodas and eat a lot of sugar?
Your overall wealth and the strength of your immune system greatly depends on the quality of food you consume. Try to eat raw, fresh foods. Cook simple food from scratch, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and avoid too many sweets (I know, this last one is hard!).
Also, avoid sodas. Try to stick to water and if you feel like having a sweet drink, try a honey or agave sweetened smoothie.
It’s also important that you drink a good amount of water every day because your body needs it to flush toxins out.
Next thing to consider is your emotional state. Are you constantly feeling stressed? Is there any change you can make in your life — slow down at work, remove yourself from a certain relationship — that will reduce your level of stress? Because long term stress will weaken the responses of your immune system.
Last but not least is hygiene and cleanliness. You’re probably thinking that I am going to tell you how important it is to wash your hands and keep your house clean, and I am. Keep your house clean… And wash your hands often with soap and warm water.
Now, after we got that out of the way, I am also going to tell you that I believe that it’s also extremely important that you play in the mud (and let your kids do so too), and that you swim in extra cold water, or that you go outside when it’s windy or cold even if just for a little bit, and that it’s ok to eat straight from the garden without washing your veggies first, and you know what? It’s fine to sometimes enjoy your lunch right there on a hay bale in the barn right after you cleaned the horse’s stall without, dare I say, wash your hands first.
Nature man, it’s good for your body and soul.
How to Boost Your Immune System With Essential Oils
So first, let’s talk about what are essential oils?
Here is the explanation as it is on my essential oils page…
Within a plant cell are two kinds of substances. Primary substances are essential for the growth and survival of the plant cells while secondary substances are essential for the well-being and survival of the organism as a whole.
While animals can choose between fight or flight when faced with a predator, plants are not able to make this decision. They simply can’t run and hide. The secondary substances in the plant cells give the plant the ability to fight for its survival and health. Specifically, they are used by plants for self-healing, defense, allelopathy, messaging, attraction of pollinators, protection, and resistance.
Essential oils are a complex mixture of those secondary substances that we extract from plants.
Since producing those secondary substances takes a great amount of energy from the plant, plants yield secondary substances that have a verity of advantages and benefits. For example, a secondary substance can protect the plant from sun damage while at the same time be used to mediate ecological interactions.
Magically, those secondary substances, or essential oils as we call them after extracting them from a plant, have the same effect on humans as they have on the plant they were extracted from.
How can we use essential oils?
We can use essential oils in three different ways…
Aromatically – or in other words, by breathing them in. Essential oils, when diffused or inhaled, can be very stimulating, calming, or soothing. They can also clean and purify the air.
Topically – the chemical structure of essential oils enables them to pass through the skin for an immediate systematic response.
Internal – some essential oils can be used as a dietary supplement for targeted wellness.

There are quite a few essential oils that will help you support a healthy immune system, the main ones are wild orange essential oil, clove bud essential oil, cinnamon essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil, and rosemary essential oil.
You can purchase each oil separately and use each one by itself, but, let me introduce you to an amazing blend of all those oils above: doTERRA’s OnGaurd.
On Gaurd’s primary benefits are support of healthy immune and respiratory function, protection against environmental threats, support of the body’s natural antioxidant defenses, promotion of healthy circulation, and in addition this oil has an uplifting and energizing aroma (some say it smells like Christmas in a bottle).
How to Use doTERRA OnGaurd to Support a Healthy Immune System
Aromatically – I have this little diffuser that I got from Amazon a couple of years ago and it’s still going strong.
To diffuse OnGaurd, simply add water to your diffuser and then add a few drops of OnGaurd. I usually add 7 or 8 drops to 100 ml of water.
- Apply a couple of drops to the back of the neck. I use it without diluting, but it is a warm oil so you might want to dilute it the first time you use it to make sure you don’t have a skin reaction. I use fractionated coconut oil as a carrier oil.
- Massage – grape oil is great as a carrier oil for massage. Add a couple of drops of OnGaurd to a tablespoon of grape oil, hand it over to your partner and head to the bedroom… Other wonderful things can happen there 😉
- Use the wonderful OnGaurd toothpaste.
- Make your own OnGaurd hand cleaning spray or use OnGaurd foaming hand wash.
- Add one drop to a glass of water or a cup of tea and drink. You can do that a couple of times a day.
- Use the OnGaurd beedlets.
- Cut some apples and soak them in water with a couple of drops of OnGaurd essential oil before eating.
- Use OnGaurd soft gels. Those also have oregano, melissa, and black pepper oils in them which are also great for your immune system.
- Use OnGaurd Protecting Throat Drops. Those are spicy and sweet with all natural organic cane juice and organic brown rice syrup. I take one or two every day.
Other Uses –
- Use the OnGaurd all purpose cleaner – this cleaner concentrate is natural and biodegradable, therefore very safe for the whole family and the environment. You can clean every surface with it as well as clean your bathroom. You can also use it as dish soap. On the bottle, you will find instructions or how to mix it for different uses.
Aside from it being natural, safe, and smelling so good, I love it that all I need is one product to clean the whole house!
- OnGaurd Laundry Detergent – let’s not forget the laundry… My least favorite house chore to do. OnGaurd laundry detergent is a wonderful, natural detergent that will leave your clothes so clean and smelling so good! I just wish it was doing the laundry hanging, folding, and putting back thing as well…
If it’s flu season if you are going through a hard emotional time, if you keep getting sick, if your kids go to school and bring home some germ friends on a regular basis, if you are going through a time when you can’t get enough sleep… There are so many reasons you might want to give your immune system a boost. I encourage you to incorporate some of those products in your life.
Start with the oil itself but work on replacing what you have in your medicine cabinet and your cleaning products with products that are natural, will support a healthy immune system and are safe for your whole family and the environment.
But most importantly, use those products regularly to keep your immune system strong so it can keep you healthy!
A special gift for you…
