Let’s talk about the simplest way that I know of to support your immune system… Immune boosting essential oils! There is so much that you can do but I’m gonna keep it simple and share with you just a couple of oils that can help you boost your immune system.
Think about your immune system as your firewall. Its job is to detect a wide variety of agents, called pathogens, like viruses and bad bacteria for example, and then distinguish them from your own healthy tissue.
Our immune system has a couple of layers of defenses in the event that those pathogens come knocking. We won’t get into a deep scientific talk here, instead, we’ll keep it simple. When virus or bacteria are trying to enter an organism, in this case, you, for example, you will notice your immune system fighting back.
Immune Boosting Essential Oils…
You might cough or sneeze, your nose might start running, your body’s temperature might rise, or you might notice inflammation which means increased blood flow to an area in trouble.
Some layers of defense we can’t see… For example, your gastric acid will fight ingested pathogens, while white blood cells will track pathogens through contact and kill microorganisms in the blood.
So, are you sick or tired all the time? Well, your immune system is working hard to fight pathogens. Of course, like any other health issue, prevention is the best treatment.
But before we talk about ways to support a strong immune system, let’s talk about some of the reasons your immune system might be weak.
Why is My Immune System Weak?
The first thing to consider is, of course, your diet. Do you eat a lot of packaged, ready-made foods, low in nutritional value? Do you drink a lot of sodas and eat a lot of sugar?
Your overall health and the strength of your immune system greatly depends on the quality of the food you consume. Try to eat raw, fresh foods.
Cook simple food from scratch, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and avoid too many sweets (I know, this last one is hard!).
Also, avoid sodas. Try to stick to water and if you feel like having a sweet drink, try honey or agave sweetened smoothie. Or choose sweet drinks that actually support your body like licorice root tea or corn silk tea.
It’s also important that you drink a good amount of water every day because your body needs it to flush toxins out.
To calculate how much water you should drink, divide your body weight by two and drink that amount in oz every day. So if you weight 150 lb, you should drink about 75 oz of water every day.
The next thing to consider is your emotional state.
Are you constantly feeling stressed? Is there anything that you change in your life — slow down at work, remove yourself from a certain relationship — that will reduce your level of stress? Because long term stress will weaken the responses of your immune system.
Our mind and the way that we think has everything to do with our mental state. You really don’t need to force any outside “reality” to change in order for you to feel good. You just need to learn how to control your thoughts.
The teachings that changed my life are the teachings of Abraham Hicks. Literally changed my life! I linked to the site, but also check out Abraham Hicks on YouTube and read all of the books.
If you are looking for a little bit of “outside” help from nature, check out my post about essential oils to relieve stress naturally.
Last but not least is hygiene and cleanliness.
You’re probably thinking that I’m going to tell you how important it is to wash your hands and keep your house clean, and I am. Keep your house clean… And wash your hands often with soap and warm water.
Now, that we have that out of the way, I am also going to tell you that I believe that it’s also extremely important that you play in the mud (and let your kids do so too), and that you swim in extra cold water, or that you go outside when it’s windy or cold even if just for a little bit.
And that it’s ok to eat straight from the garden without washing your veggies first. And you know what? It’s fine to sometimes enjoy your lunch right there on a hay bale in the barn right after you cleaned the horse’s stall without, dare I say, washing your hands first.
Nature man, it’s good for your body and soul.
Essential Oils For Immune Support…
So first, let’s talk about what essential oils are.
Here is the explanation as it is on my essential oils page…
Within a plant cell are two kinds of substances. Primary substances are essential for the growth and survival of the plant cells while secondary substances are essential for the well-being and survival of the organism as a whole.
While animals can choose between fight or flight when faced with a predator, plants are not able to make this decision. They simply can’t run and hide.
The secondary substances in the plant cells give the plant the ability to fight for its survival and health. Specifically, they are used by plants for self-healing, defense, allelopathy, messaging, attraction of pollinators, protection, and resistance.
Essential oils are a complex mixture of those secondary substances that we extract from plants.
Since producing those secondary substances takes a great amount of energy from the plant, plants yield secondary substances that have a variety of advantages and benefits.
For example, a secondary substance can protect the plant from sun damage while at the same time be used to mediate ecological interactions.
Human body cells and plant cells are very similar, therefore, those secondary substances (or essential oils, as we call them after extracting them from a plant) have the same effect on humans as they have on the plant they were extracted from.
How Can We Use Essential Oils?
We can use essential oils in three different ways…
Aromatically – or in other words, by breathing them in.
Essential oils, when diffused or inhaled, can be very stimulating, calming, or soothing. They can also clean and purify the air.
Topically – the chemical structure of essential oils enables them to pass through the skin for an immediate systematic response.
Internal – some essential oils can be used as a dietary supplement for targeted wellness.
Essential Oils That Support the Immune System…
There are quite a few essential oils that will help you support a healthy immune system, the main ones are…
Wild orange essential oil
Clove bud essential oil
Cinnamon essential oil
Eucalyptus essential oil and…
Rosemary essential oil.
You can purchase each oil separately and use each one by itself, but, let me introduce you to an amazing blend of all those oils above: doTERRA’s OnGuard.
OnGuard’s primary benefit is the support of healthy immune and respiratory function, protection against environmental threats, support of the body’s natural antioxidant defenses, promotion of healthy circulation, and in addition this oil has an uplifting and energizing aroma (some say it smells like Christmas in a bottle).
I will have a custom link for you at the end. That link will include all of the products that I talk about below.
First, let’s learn how you would use essential oils to boost your immune system and then I’ll share with you where and how to purchase them.
Using These Immune Boosting Essential Oils…
There are a few ways to use this wonderful blend…
Aromatically – I have a little diffuser that I got from Amazon a couple of years ago and it’s still going strong (you can also get one from doTERRA).
To diffuse OnGuard, simply add water to your diffuser and then add a few drops of OnGuard. I usually add 7 or 8 drops to 100 ml of water.
- Apply a couple drops to the back of the neck 2 to 3 times a day. I use the oil without diluting it.
However, you should know that OnGuard is a warm oil (meaning it warms the skin a little bit when you apply it) so you might want to dilute it the first time you use it to make sure you don’t have a skin reaction.
I always dilute it for my kids since their skin is a bit more sensitive. I use fractionated coconut oil as a carrier oil.
- Massage – add a couple of drops of OnGuard to a tablespoon of coconut oil and hand it over to your partner.
OnGuard is very effective when we use it as a supplement. In fact, this is my favorite way of using it…
- Use OnGuard soft gels. They also have oregano, melissa, and black pepper oils in them which are also great for your immune system. I take 2 a day, every day!
When my kids are able to swallow them (around 8 years old) I give them 2 a day as well.
- Add a couple of drops to a glass of water or a cup of tea and drink. You can do that a couple times a day.
- Use the OnGuard beadlets. These are tiny pills that contain 1/4 of a drop of the oil blend. My kids (the little ones who can’t take the adult pills) take 4 a day.
- Cut some apples and soak them in water with a couple drops of OnGuard essential oil before eating.
- Use OnGuard Protecting Throat Drops. Those are spicy and sweet with all-natural organic cane juice and organic brown rice syrup.
I keep them close by all the time. They are healthy and also a great way to satisfy the need for something sweet.
One More Important Oil That Supports The Immune System…
I am going to add one more oil here that I really recommend that you add to your everyday routine…
It’s one of my favorite oils that I truly can’t live without! Oregano oil.
Oregano oil is so so strong and powerful! It acts as a cleansing agent and a powerful antioxidant.
Aromatically – oregano oil has a high content of phenol which means that we have to use it very lightly when diffusing. Add only a drop or two to 100 ml of water.
Topically – always, always dilute oregano! When I say that it’s a strong oil, I mean it with all of my heart! Do not apply it neat on your skin.
Dilute a few drops in fractionated coconut oil and apply on the skin.
For my kids, I apply it around their ears. You can also apply it to the bottom of your feet if you don’t want to smell like pizza all day. or you can apply it to the back of the neck or the chest.
Internally – I add a drop of oregano oil into an empty capsule every day to support the health of my immune system and the health of my digestive system.
Essential Oils For Immune Support…
If it’s flu season if you are going through a hard emotional time, if you keep getting sick, if your kids go to school and bring home some germ friends on a regular basis, if you are going through a time when you can’t get enough sleep…
There are so many reasons you might want to give your immune system a boost. I encourage you to incorporate some of these products in your life.
In fact, prevention is always the best way so I do believe we should support our immune system on a regular base. We use On Guard every day through the day. It might take some time to get used to but now, it’s just a healthy habit.
How to Purchase Immune Boosting Essential Oils…
I created a custom link for you with the products that I mentioned above. You’ll also notice a $35 membership sign up fee. doTERRA is a member-only club (kinda like Costco).
Once you join as a member, you are able to purchase all the products at wholesale prices which are 25% off the retail price. This discount covers the membership charge after purchasing just a couple of products but it allows you to purchase at wholesale prices throughout the year.
Note, that at the time that I am updating this post the world is experiencing a crazy virus spread and doTERRA is out of OnGuard soft-gels and beadlets. Once they become available again, I’ll add them.
