At first, I convinced myself that I was going to write this post because the holidays are coming and it’s always a time when everyone is running all over the place trying to get everything done, wrapped and cooked in time and there is so much stress everywhere.
Screw the holidays, there are plenty of reasons for stress year round no matter who you are.
The truth is… These past few months have been the most stressful of my life.
I felt like the peaceful bubble I’ve worked so hard for so many years to create was about to be popped by the pointy end of the spears of an army of meanies who were marching toward me steadily.
The dream I am finally living was threatened by those who can’t see what I see. Who doesn’t share the same dream, who live in the “real” world as opposed to my precious lala land.
You know the feeling? As if everything is about to fall down, kicked to the ground like a wooden block tower. I know you know the feeling.
The thing is, I’ve learned so much in those hard months…
Not about others because it seems like I can never figure out what’s going on in someone else’s head no matter how hard I try…
But I’ve learned so much about myself. Who I am, what’s important to me, where I want to go and be, and what are the things I am not willing to compromise.
I’ve come to peace with being selfish because I discovered that I have nothing to give to anyone if I am miserable. I’ve come to peace with putting me first and taking care of myself. I’ve come to peace with slowing down and letting go.
I’ve learned that I don’t need to fix everything or make everyone happy, it’s not my job and I can’t do it anyway.
I’ve discovered that my only job is to be happy no matter what. To deliberately, even when it feels like everything is falling over, to choose to be happy. To choose appreciation over complaining, to choose to smile instead of sulk, to choose to love instead of to resent (still working on this one…).
To joyfully, wholeheartedly drown in the mud of myself if they are coming with me or not.
I guess I just had to say it out loud, to share it with you.
But the stress, man, it makes you so tired all the time.
The thing is, it’s unnecessary. Really. Because you know what? No matter what is happening, no matter how bad it feels or looks, it’s all working out for you and me.
All of us, maybe us homesteaders especially, have the tendency to want to fix things all the time. Make things better, poke them, move them, transform them, redesign them, discuss them, evaluate them, plan them, make goals and decisions… When most of the time, the only thing we really need to do is chill.
Chill and have fun and know that everything is working out. Find something that does go well in our lives and focus on that instead of obsessing on the problems.
Chill and get out of the way so the universe can fix it for us. It will. Nature is so great and smart and harmonious and we are such a big part of it but so many times we forget it. We try to manipulate it and direct it instead of just get out of its way and let it do its thing.
What is stress?
Hans Selye, an Hungarian-Canadian endocrinologist who conducted very important scientific work on the non-specific response of an organism to stressors, defined stress in 1936 as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change.”
Stress is a normal feeling and in fact, not all stress is bad.
Stress is a sign for the body that it is under attack and it activates the fight-or-flight response by releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals like cortisol, adrenaline, and norepinephrine to prepare the body for physical action.
The release of those hormones and chemicals enables us to focus our attention so we can respond to the situation. In many cases, this ability saves lives… But what happens when stress is chronic?
Effects of Stress on the Body
In order for our body to be able to focus all its attention and resources on the stressful situation it faces, it slows or shuts down other functions of the body.
Blood might be diverted to important muscles which are necessary to either fight or flee which means brain function is minimised because of the lack of blood.
Unnecessary bodily functions such as digestion, excretory, and reproduction might shut down or slow down considerably.
Needless to say, all this can lead to so many health issues.
How to Relieve Stress
While sharing essential oils with others I see and hear so many people with digestion issues (for example, it might be any other health concern). Most of those people are looking for a solution for their digestion issues where really they need to be looking at their overall lifestyle.
NO, I am not talking about your diet! All this hype about healthy eating is stressing everyone out!
Eat that cake, baby, it’s OK. That greasy bacon at Sunday breakfast? Enjoy it! The cake and bacon won’t kill you, the stress about how bad you are for eating them (and God forbid, enjoying it) will.
I am talking about your train of thoughts. About your mental health.
Are you a happy, positive, joyful being?
Are you eager to wake up in the morning and start the day?
Are you focusing on the positive aspects of your life or do you let what you don’t have be an excuse for being miserable?
You are probably saying, Lee, how in the world can I be joyful, appreciative, and positive when all this crap is going down? And it’s right in the middle of my life, it’s in front of my face all day every day!
Friend, I feel your pain. I know so well what you mean. But in the past few months, I’ve learned that it’s indeed, a choice.
You choose if you focus on your hurting back or your good-feeling arms. You choose if you focus on the wonderful day you had with your kids or the screwed up relationship you have with whoever.
You choose to smile and appreciate or complain and sulk.
It’s our choice, every moment of every day, we make the decision!
How Essential Oils Can Help?
See, most people, when they don’t feel good, run to the doctor and expect or demand a drug. Something that will fix the problem. It should fix it now if not yesterday and make me the wonderful, energetic, happy, and strong person I know inside of me that I should be.
But the drugs never cause you to change your focus. They never teach you how to be happy and appreciative.
They usually relieve the pain or stress. It feels good for a little while until the side effects become noticeable… Then there are other pains that were never there before and of course, you focus on those which cause you to look for a solution for them.
So you go get another drug to fix that issue. But that drug, just like the one before, doesn’t teach you how to change your focus or be happy. It relieves the pain for a while until its side effects become noticeable. So now there are other pains that were never there before and of course, you focus on those which causes you to look for a solution for them…
And on and on it goes…
Before you know it you are so disappointed in yourself for not keeping it together and so stressed about the tomorrow you can’t control.
Folks, I invite you to break the cycle. No matter where you are, no matter how stressful your life is or how messed up and out of control it feels, I invite you to take control of the one thing you can take control of: your thoughts.
So how essential oils come into all of this?
Elena Brower, on the Empowered Life Series on April 2017 explains it best:

Using the oils helps us choose our emotions intentionally and deliberately instead of offering them aimlessly and reactivity to things that come our way during the day.

So here is a good routine to follow to relieve stress…
It’s important that we understand that each morning is a new beginning. While we sleep at night, all attraction stops. Our brain clears itself, it’s checking out, literally, and in the morning we reemerge into a new beginning.
Step One – choose good feeling thoughts right when you wake up. It doesn’t have to be specific. Say and think things like how wonderful this bed is, how grateful I am for this warm house, how refreshed I feel…
Step Two – Select your intention and your oil for the day. Write your intention down on a little piece of paper that you can carry around with you. Below, I’ve made a list of intentions to choose from.
You decide, today I am going to feel harmony, patience, and clarity. Say it to yourself a few times until it becomes your truth; until you can feel how delicious it is to feel this way.
Step Three – Move. Again from Elena..
“The movement center in your brain is called the primary motor cortex, which is connected to your adrenal glands, where hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline are produced when you’re stressed.
When you exercise, the production of those stress hormones is kept to a minimum, and you increase your resilience to stress.”
It doesn’t have to be anything too difficult. I love yoga so I record “Namaste Yoga” for myself and play one episode which is about 25 minutes.
Step Four – Meditate. 5 to 15 minutes (preferably 15). After your practice, sit down or lay down and focus on your breath. Clear your mind and try to just be still. If you feel a thought forming go back to focus on your breath (don’t manipulate it, just focus on it).
This is hard for me, I have to admit. I am getting better but not quite there yet. To help myself I play a meditation music video from You-Tube for 15 minutes and try to go back to focus on the music when my brain starts wondering.
It also helps to concentrate on a monotonous sound in the room, like the hum of a refrigerator or the sound of a clock ticking.
Step Five – You are ready to start your day.
During the day do a few things. First, diffuse oils that are high in linalool like Petitgrain, Lavender, Clary Sage, Basil, Cilantro, and Coriander. Those oils help your body relax and reduce anxious or sad feeling.
Here are a few examples of blends you can use:
Blend 1 – Basil, Coriander, Wild Orange, Lavender.
Blend 2 – Clary Sage, Sandalwood, Bergamont.
Blend 3 – Lavender, Patchouli, Clary Sage.
Blend 4 – Vetiver, Lavender, sandalwood, Ylang Ylang.
Fill up your diffuser with water and add a couple of drops of each oil and diffuse.
Second, carry your little intention note and corresponding oil with you. Choose to see the positive aspects of anything that comes your way during the day, but if you feel stress and negativity creep in pull out your note and read it aloud to yourself a few times like you did in the morning. Apply your oil topically or place a drop on the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, cup your nose and inhale.
Remember the oils are there to help you relax and soothe yourself into joyful being. It’s your thoughts that you have to practice how to direct and control.
A great exercise to help us train our brain is The Positive Aspects Notebook. Get yourself a notebook and every day sit down and write a few pages of things you appreciate about your life, a situation, a relationship, a person, a place… Anything you are struggling with.
This is such a simple yet powerful thing to do! It will soothe into relaxation and help you change your point of attraction from a negative to a positive one.
Step Six – Before you go to sleep at night, meditate again. Lay down in bed or sit up and try to calm your brain and let go of your thoughts. Assure yourself that everything is always working out for you in the best way and that you are going to have a great night sleep. During the night, the events of the day before are forgotten and tomorrow you’ll wake up and reemerge into the world with a clean slate.
