My mother is a great example of the power of essential oils. For years, she suffered from gastritis (inflammation of the stomach). She will constantly feel uncomfortable and will struggle with visiting the restroom regularly. She will feel like she was going to explode after two bites of healthy, light food and her stomach was visibly swollen to the point she couldn’t close her pants all the way.
Doctors prescribed all kinds of medications which she took on a daily basis. They helped a little bit but nothing really solved the problem. A few short hours after she took them, she will go back to feeling the all-consuming pain and discomfort.
The worst part was that those medications had other side effects. They will cause nausea or vomiting or a general feeling of weakness. It wasn’t pretty or fun but she didn’t think there was another way to handle this.
A few months ago I started using pure essential oils from doTERRA. I was looking for a quick natural remedy that I can grab whenever we needed a boost to better support our bodies and decided to give this company a try.
I used essential oils before, ones that I bought from a local store, but they didn’t work as great as I thought they should have. I really believe in the power of plants, so when I came across this company that promised the purest and most potent essential oils and after researching the company, meeting their health advocates, and trying one of their oils, I decided to give them a try.
The oils (and the company) didn’t disappoint. Those oils are so powerful and I now use them daily for health support, cleaning, around the garden (as pest control), and I can’t wait to try them on our future animals.
I was also really interested to see if I can help my mother with her symptoms of gastritis.
This past April, we flew to Israel to visit family and I brought a bottle of our digestive blend with me for her to try.
I’ll tell you all about what’s in there, but before we get into all the details I wanted to tell you how much better she is now feeling. I gave it a couple of months so I can check if the oil keeps working before I shared this information with you.
She started taking it when I was still in Israel and after only a couple of days she was able to close her pants all the way, her stomach inflammation was visibly gone, and she was able to enjoy a full meal.
You should have seen the smile on her face. It made my day.
She is feeling so good, that she now only uses the oil blend once a day as a dietary supplement.
But, let’s start at the beginning…
What is Gastritis?
Gastritis is an irritation and inflammation of the stomach lining.
It can happen gradually, in this case, it’s called chronic gastritis (what my mother has), or it can occur suddenly, in this case, it’s called acute gastritis.
Gastritis can be caused by excessive use of alcohol, certain medications (like aspirin), chronic vomiting, stress, bacteria, bile reflux (a backflow of bile into the stomach), infections caused by bacteria or viruses, and anemia.
Symptoms of gastritis include abdominal pain and bloating, vomiting, nausea and upset stomach, indigestion, loss of appetite or a feeling of fullness after just a few bites of food, burning in the stomach, and black stools.
A Word About Gastritis Diet…
If you eat a poor diet you are going to have a million health problems. If your menu is built of packaged, ready-made food that you get in the freezer section of the grocery store or if you buy your lunch at a restaurant every day you are in trouble.
It’s not that it’s not OK to eat out once in a while, we do it too and it’s totally fine. We also stick chicken nuggets in the oven once in a while or eat cheap noodles. But your diet should not be based on those things.
Greasy foods, spicy food, acidic food, alcohol, and caffeine… Those are gastritis foods to avoid, those are the kind of foods that will promote gastritis and will cause a great pain if you already have gastritis.
That being said, my mother is a Weight Watchers instructor for the past 12 years. She takes regular classes with a dietitian to further her own education, her diet is based on fruits and vegetables, she rarely eats out at a restaurant, and she still has gastritis.
So eat healthy, base your diet on raw foods, make your own meals so you know what goes inside them, try to purchase quality and local ingredients, eat vegetables and fruits at every meal, eat lots of garlic, and eat small meals often.
However, if I look at my mother, it’s unfortunate to say that even if you do all that you might still have gastritis.
Sometimes our body needs a bit more help…
This is where essential oils come in.
Essential Oils to Support a Healthy Digestive System
Ginger Essential Oil – ginger is a herbaceous perennial from the family Zingiberaceae (same family as turmeric and cardamom). It’s known for its digestive properties and is widely used in the culinary world.
It’s great to add ginger to your diet any time you can or make ginger root tea by boiling the ginger in a pot with a couple of cups of water for a few minutes (add honey to sweeten), but the best way to use ginger for its health benefits is by using a high-quality essential oil because it contains the highest levels of gingerol (the active constituent in ginger).
Ginger essential oil is derived from the fresh rhizome of the ginger plant — the subterranean stalk of a plant that shoots out the root system. Ginger is best known as a digestive aid and for helping to ease occasional indigestion and nausea.
Peppermint Essential Oil – this useful essential oil is gathered by steam distillation of the above ground parts of the peppermint plant. The active ingredients include menthol and menthone.
This oil has so many benefits, but in regards to stomach health, it is recommended for its soothing effect of the gastric lining and colon because of its ability to reduce muscle spasm.
Tarragon Essential Oil – tarragon is part of the sunflower family and is widely used as a culinary herb. Tarragon essential oil is distilled from the leaves of the tarragon herb. Tarragon can aid with digestion and help maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract.
Fennel Essential Oil – this essential oil is collected by steam distillation of the fennel seed. It has a sweet, licorice smell to it.
Fennel essential oil is recommended to use if you have stomach concerns because it will support a healthy digestive system, healthy metabolism, and healthy circulation.
Caraway Essential Oil – like fennel, caraway essential oil is extracted from the seed of the plant. Even though we don’t use it much in American cuisine, it is very popular as a spice in the Middle East, India, and Europ.
Caraway has many health benefits like increasing mother’s milk supply, supporting cardiac health, and it’s ability to help opening airways and respiratory support in the cold winter months.
But in regards to specific stomach issues, it is used because it speeds up digestion by stimulating gastric juices, acids, and bile into the stomach.
Anis Essential Oil – this essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the Anis’ dried fruit.
In old times, people used to chew anis seeds because of its ability to help digestion and relieve the body of gas.
Anis essential oil also supports healthy metabolism.
You have two options here…
The first is to purchase the oils separately and use each of them by itself. Each of those oils has additional health benefits that I didn’t mention above because they support other systems of the body. Really, there can be a whole post written about each of those oils and their health benefits.
But if stomach issues or supporting the digestive system is your main concern, I recommend using a premade blend of all those oils. It will certainly be much more affordable than purchasing a bottle of each one of them.
Where Can You Get the Digestive Blend?
When it comes to essential oils, it’s all about quality. If you are not using pure and potent oils, you might as well be throwing your money to the garbage.
Not only you’ll be wasting your time, but you will also be disappointed because the oils won’t work or won’t be as powerful as they can and should be.
doTERRA delivers pure and potent essential oils that work!
DigestZen is doTERRA’s digestive blend. It is a mix of all the oils listed above and is designed specifically to support a healthy digestive system. You can purchase it here for its retail price or learn how to join doTERRA here so you can shop wholesale (25% off retail).
Please note: in this post, I wanted to introduce this wonderful essential oil blend to you, however, doTERRA has a whole line of DigestZen products that are based on those oils mentioned above that will help you support a healthy digestion system. How to Use DigestZen ( or Each Essential Oil Separately)?
Diffuse – essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors which have a direct link to the limbic system.
The best way to utilize this benefit is diffusing essential oils. Fill your diffuser with water and a few drops of the oil and place it by your side when you work on the computer, cook, read, watch TV, or sleep.
I use this very affordable diffuser for the past year and it still works great.
Topically – essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin. They then stay in the applied area for localized benefit.
If you have sensitive skin, make sure to dilute the oil with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil.
It is also advised to use several small doses throughout the day rather than one single large dose. Start with one or two drops and apply to your stomach. Massage it in a circular motion for a minute or so. You can repeat this up to six times a day.
Internally – all those oils above can be used as a dietary supplement. Essential oils are lipid soluble and are very effective when ingested. They enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract and are transported throughout the rest of the body.
You can use essential oils in recipes, add them to your tea, take them in a veggie capsule, add them to milk, smoothies or yogurt, or simply add a couple of drops to a glass of water.
My mother has been adding a couple of drops to a glass of water every night. After only three days she could feel a big improvement in her digestive health.
I encourage you to give essential oils a try. A 15ml bottle of DigestZen is only $31 wholesale and I am confident that it will help you support your digestive health tremendously.
I recommend everyone uses this oil regularly even if you don’t have stomach discomfort. We apply it on the stomach and use it internally often to support our digestive health. I feel great that I am able to help my kids when they come to me and complain that their stomach hurts. It’s a simple, natural solution that I turn to on a daily basis.
