If you make your bread at home, you know how important it is to have a simple recipe on hand. A recipe that doesn’t take a whole lot of time to make, a recipe with simple ingredients that you probably already have in your house, and of course, that tastes great. This simple white bread recipe answers all those requirements.
This bread reminds Italian bread very much. It’s got only six ingredients in it, and it is great with both sweet or savory toppings.
To a large mixing bowl, add seven cups of bread flour (all-purpose flour will work too, just make sure to sift it). I knead my dough by hand, but if you use a mixer, you’ll add the ingredients to the mixer’s bowl.
And one half cup good olive oil.
Fill a measuring cup with 3 cups of lukewarm water and start adding to the bowl a little bit at a time. You will probably only need 2.5 cups of water. Add some water, mix, add some more water, mix until the dough pulls together.
I use a wooden spoon at the beginning until it gets too hard…
Transfer the dough into a floured surface and knead for 7-10 minutes, or use a mixer with a dough hook and knead for the same amount of time.
After 7-10 minutes of kneading the dough will look and feel smooth, soft and elastic.
Oil a clean, large bowl with olive oil…
Turn the dough in the bowl to coat it with oil, so it doesn’t get dry.
Then cover with a warm blanket and set aside to rise.
Most recipes will tell you to let the dough double its size at this point, but my aunt, which is a baker, taught me that this is not necessary. It only needs to rest for 30 minutes or so.
And this is how it looks after 30 minutes.
Place the dough on a working surface and shape it into one large loaf.
And shape the two halves into loaves. You can place them in two bread pans, but I just like baking them on a baking sheet.
Cover the loaves, and let them rise for an hour (this is were the dough needs more time to rise). Bake the bread for 55 minutes in a 350F pre-heated oven.
If you want the crust of your bread harder, spray the loaves with water two or three times while they are in the oven. All you do is fill a spray bottle with water, open the oven and spray the loaves a few times. Repeat this every 20 minutes or so (2-3 times).
Let the loaves cool for a few minutes on a rack before slicing.
There is nothing like the smell of bread baking in the oven! After you get used to eating your homemade bread, there is no way back. The store-bought stuff tastes like cardboard and doesn’t fill you up.
Do you make bread at home? Is there one recipe you regularly use? I will be happy if you leave a link to it in the comments.

In case your blog cannot show Hebrew –
I looooooooove your bread, and all I need is butter!! A few slice with butter is all I need for a great supper 🙂
Personally I love baking bread, especially Challahs (which is my specialty)

Apparently, it can’t show Hebrew so I am happy you wrote this in English too. Nothing better than good bread and butter. It is really all you need for supper. Maybe a good tomato too 😉

Goat milk is so precious. I really hope to have a goat one day.
