I can’t believe I am writing this down… A dream came true today for our family….
We closed on 20 acres of unrestricted farm land! (jumping with glee!)
Three acres of the land were rented to farmers in the past, so they are cleared. The rest was harvested (of trees) but still has stumps and some of it is still wooded.
The land is about 45 minutes from where we live now, in a small North Carolina town. It’s a very agricultural area which I love. The big city is 40 miles away and the closest grocery store is 13 miles away.
The property goes a little bit beyond the tree line and just underneath it runs a beautiful clear water creek.
Its got a little bit of road frontage which was important to us in case we ever want to have a farm stand.
There is so much work to be done! There isn’t even a driveway. But for the next few months we are just going to plan, plan, plan.
The long term goal for this piece of land is to become our farmstead. A homestead to sustain our family but also a small profitable farm.
We have so many ideas and we are so excited to start move some dirt but we decided that we are going to treat this project like a business. This means that first we have to have a well written business plan, from mapping to budgets and everything in between.
I will share every step of our adventure here with you and I hope you’ll come back to check our progress.
About a month ago I started researching, but I know that there is nothing better than other’s experience. Please share your experience with us. Did you ever build your own home? Did you start a small farm? Did you clear land? Did you built a driveway? Where do you think we should start? What should we do first?
