In this post, I’ll show you how to get rid of a UTI without antibiotics. This is such an easy trick! I wish I had known it years ago. It’s all about changing the pH in our urinary system and it’s a super easy thing to do with ingredients you probably already have on hand. If you are struggling with a painful UTI that keeps coming back, read this how to get rid of a UTI without going to the doctor article! I am sure it will help you. Also, make sure to check the comment section below for many more suggestions from other readers like Alka Zeltzer for UTI.

I used to be a truck driver. My ex-husband and I owned an eighteen wheeler and drove all over the US and Canada. We lived on the road for two years.

It was a great adventure. First, it certainly teaches you a thing or two about yourself and your spouse. Not to mention it puts your relationship to the test, living in a rolling box with one twin bed and that’s pretty much it (we enjoyed that adventure but obviously our relationship didn’t last…).

Second, it was a lot of fun spending each day in a different place. Moving around. Exploring, meeting new and interesting people.

I just wish we’d had a working toilet in the truck.

One thing I do not miss is gas station restrooms. Imagine using only gas station restrooms for two years in a row and not having a decent place to wash off after you do the deed, if you know what I mean… Psheee! I had more urinary tract infections than hairs on my body. And believe me, I have some hair on my body.

OK, this last paragraph was totally disgusting!

Oh well…

Man, I wish I knew this simple (and I mean ridiculously simple…) trick of how to get rid of a UTI without antibiotics back then. Would’ve saved me major pain and discomfort, not to mention gas and time. Can you imagine trying to find a clinic with an eighteen wheeler parking spot.

Yeah, not happening.

Let’s cover the basics for a moment…

What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

UTI is an infection in the bladder.

What Cases a UTI?

UTI is caused by bacteria that travel through the urethra, which is the tube that transfers urine from our bladder to the outside of our body.

Women especially are prone to a UTI because we have a shorter urethra and because the opening of our urethra is close to the anus. Bacteria (such as E. coli) from the large intestine can leave through the anus and find it’s way to the opening of the urethra.

Talk about bad design!

Anyway, this is why we should always clean from front to back after using the restrooms.

If not treated, the infection can spread and reach the kidneys.

What are the Symptoms of UTI?

You can’t miss it. You’ll want to go to the restrooms frequently, even though very little comes out when you are there. When you try to pee, it will burn. Your urine might smell different or have a different color. You might feel tired, shaky, and have back or lower stomach pain. In some cases, you might even have a fever.

How to Get Rid of a UTI Without Antibiotics?

Before I got into natural, homemade medicine, I did what most people do. I ran to the doctor. Time after time after time. I ran to the doctor, and he or she prescribed antibiotics that will kill the bad bacteria. The only problem was that it killed the good bacteria as well, leaving my body exposed to bad bacteria.

The cycle never ended. I had one infection after another.

This little trick here helped me find instant relief from UTI pain and a complete cure within 3 or 4 days without the use of antibiotics! It saved me a trip to the doctor, and I got to keep my good bacteria.

But first, it’s time for the disclaimer…

**I am not a doctor. Nor I will ever be. In this post, I share with you how I cured my UTI without using antibiotics. This way might not be the right way to take care of your particular body. **

So here is what I used:

1 teaspoon of baking soda.

8 oz of water or juice. I used cranberry-grape juice because it is super sweet and helps hide the salty taste of the baking soda a bit.

All I did is mix the baking soda with the juice or water and drink it. I did this three times a day for three days and my UTI was gone. I would have continued another couple of days if it wasn’t gone, but no more than a week (please take the time to read comment number 4 below for additional information about the risks of using baking soda). I felt an almost instant relief in pain by the end of the first day, and by the end of the third day, my body was back to normal.

Baking soda is an alkaline substance. It helps neutralize the acidity of the urine and helps the body fight the infection.

Always try to prevent first. Drink a lot of water, have clean sex and urine right after, wipe from front to back after using the restroom, and avoid irritating feminine products. I also suggest that you make sure to strengthen your immune system naturally by using essential oils. Read more here: How to Boost Your Immune System With Essential Oils.

However, if you find yourself running to the restroom every fifteen minutes and cursing like a sailor when you are there, try this trick. It solved my problem quickly.

  1. I suffer from UTI’s pretty consistently and this last time I went to the DR. the antibiotics weren’t working and I probably could have gone back to get a different kind of antibiotic but I just took large amounts of Vitamin C and a couple cranberry pills every day for 3 days and it was gone! But I am for sure keeping this trick in mind for next time.

  2. I have cleared many UTIs with the baking soda, cranberry juice, d-mannose combo. I’m generally not a natural treatment type person but I hate taking antibiotics. They destroy my digestive system. I was under the impression that the baking soda just changed the pH of your urine so that it didn’t hurt to pee while your urinary tract was inflamed. Regardless that is basically what it does for me so I can easily empty my bladder. Then chugging diet cranberry juice, drinking lots of water, and taking d-mannose do the rest. That’s been my magic bullet for several years. I can usually clear an infection in less than a week. And I don’t get the horrible side effects of antibiotics.

  3. I found out about D-Mannose shortly after my first UTI from a friend who suffered from frequent UTIs. After 3 days of pain and discomfort and trying to deal with it naturally, including cranberry juice and supplements, she shared with me how it had helped her time and time again as she’s prone to frequent UTIs. Within a day I noticed relief and by the next day felt almost completely back to normal. By the third day I felt no trace of it! I keep it on hand just in case now, but I’ve been fortunate not to have dealt with one since! I would HIGHLY recommend this product!!!

  4. Anyone ever use D-Manoose? Hearing a lot of positive things about this supplement. It apparently makes the walls of the bladder slick, so no bacteria can stick in the first place. Perfect! My UTI’S are resistant to antibiotics. .. I have read and used the baking soda method with poor results, and shouldn’t be using it anyway, due to genetic predisposition of ailmenents mentioned in comment #4. Thanks for your thoughtful post. UTI’S are extremely, exasperatingly excruciatingly painful, and are very common. Keep the conversation going ladies! Also, not as common but men do get them, however they are DEFINITELY carriers! … and clueless! I am married, and every time I mention I have a UTI, it gets associated with STD , due to location I suppose… My point here is: don’t let them touch you with that thing unless it has been thoroughly cleaned! We dont need to invite the bacteria to the party!

    1. Girl, you made me laugh!
First time I am hearing of D-Manoose. Sounds like a supplement that can be helpful in preventing but I am not sure about treating and existing UTI…

  5. This worked, but I think boiling about a quarter cup raisins in one cup of water until half the water was gone and eating the raisin with a little sugar and drinking the juice worked better. Did this for 3 days and it didn’t come back.

  6. I was suffering with a uti for about 4 weeks I went through three rounds of antibotics before I got really mad at the not so great community health center I was being seen at. Anyways on a whim I read your article and decided to give it a try I did 3 doses of baking soda in 12 ounces of liquid for three days and now I am symptom free! Thank you taking the time to write the article and thank you all for leaving great advice in the comments as well!!

    1. Oh! I am so happy to read this. Many times the antibiotics puts you in an infection cycle because it kills all bacteria, bad but also good. Remember to maintain your health now (especially in the next couple of weeks until it goes back to complete balance). Drink a lot of cranberry juice and eat a lot of yogurt to introduce back the good bacteria that the antibiotic killed. Stay healthy!

  7. Never tried that method before. I have always used two Original Alka-Seltzer tablets in one fourth cup of water. Wait until it quits fizzling and then drink. In one half hour to forty-five minutes, you are back to normal. If you have waited too long, you might want to try the same one again. I have been using this method for some years now and it only takes the one drink and it has always worked. Have told several friend and even my daughters and grand daughter. At first, they just looked at me like I was nuts….until they tried it and it worked. This might not work on some, but everyone that I know that has tried it….it has worked.

    1. Yes, someone else told me that this works for them too. It’s probably because baking soda and Alka-Seltzer both contain Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate.

  8. I often advised patients and friends alike … pee patiently. Let me explain, we are always happy to relieve that pressure on a very full bladder, so when the stream stops we wipe and run. A nurse I worked with long ago told me something an Osteopathic physician taught her (yes, I trained at an Osteopathic teaching hospital, it was awesome) … wait there on the toilet just a bit longer and relax for a couple minutes, take a slow deep breath in and slowly release it a few times while concentrating on relaxing down there, within that time the rest of the urine above bladder traveling down the ureters will reach bladder and be able to exit the urethra. When we rush the finish, that small amount of urine is left in an empty bladder, exposed to the walls and able to grow bacteria because it hasn’t properly flushed. That’s a simplified explanation but has helped everyone she and others, myself included, shared it with. Also, “honeymoonitis” can be avoided if you do this immediately after sex and clean well from front to back, giving the over stimulated urethral opening a clean chance to avoid infections/inflammations.

The next piece of information every female of every age needs is: drink plain cranberry juice daily, it inhibits growth of bacteria and thus reduces inflammation in bladder/urethra. If you are unfortunate enough to need antibiotics, start eating active yogurt as well as continuing to drink as much cranberry juice as you can during the infection stage. Continue the yogurt after the medicine is finished to help avoid those lovely yeast infections caused by the antibiotic.

Prevention, patience, and the knowledge that there are natural ways to prevent repeat infections is never a bad thing. Just don’t rule out medical help when necessary, what works for many people most of the time-sometimes doesn’t.

Just my motherly advice, to take or leave as you wish. I have not suffered one more bladder infection since being taught all this. That ONE was enough! Good luck!

    1. Great information! Thanks so much for sharing this. The “pee patiently” advice is new to me, never heard it before. Thanks!

    2. Yes, and as my hysterical urologist told me, don’t push to pee, your not having a baby! Lol, no one should ever have to push to get the pee out. Just sit, relax.’go’ sit a bit, and I’ve always gone more. I had UTI’s for yrs, this has made a diff! And also as a caution on the banking soda, it also can bloat the belly, just like you can see what it does when you add it to anything, and is bad if you are prone to ulcers. And if you’ve had gastric bypass, you can’t use it.

  9. 20+ years ago I was having numerous urinary tract infections and at the same time having frequent diarrhea. My doctor recommended using wet wipes after each bowel movement and I have only had one infection sine then. It works great for me and I hope it works as well for others.

  10. Try 2 alka-seltzer in a half can of soda or juice every 4 hours for three doses. Then one dose every 12 hours. Same idea, easier to take with you in your travel first aid kit. If two days of this does not work, then you need a urgent care visit.

    1. You need to be careful not to take too much Alka seltzer as it has a lot of aspirinin it that can thin your blood to much.

  11. Lee, you are so hilarious!! I can relate to EVERY point you made. I’ve also had more than my fair shares of UTIs. Women were definitely designed poorly! I’ve tried the same thing and it has worked for me too. Antibiotics suck, plus the usually result in a yeast infection which is a new problem. No fun even if you drive a normal car and have a bathroom in your home! I’ve been drinking raw kefir lately in hopes of keeping my good bacteria count high so we will see how that goes long-term. I get maybe 2-3 UTIs a year, some worse than others. Good news there is hope!

    1. 😉 Poor design, I’m telling you (what tells us for sure that God is a man!).
I should try kefir, I hear about it a lot but never got around to making some. Definitely on my to-do list.

    2. I always have a supply of acidophilus capsules at home and I take them any time I have to take antibiotics. They restore the good bacteria and keep the yeast infections away. Before I started doing that I used to end up with a yeast infection every time.

      1. Yes, I know about acidophilus. I think it’s actually a good idea to take it all the time.

  12. Though this is a common way in aiding the body to heal itself of the UTI, As a paramedic it may be wise to inform your readers of possible safety concerns in regards to this treatment [which I do support by the way], but I have seen it overused/abused in cases I have personally cared for in the past that could have been averted by better education in its use. So please don’t get me wrong, I am not criticizing at all. I just thought it might be wise to have better informed readers and avoid any mishaps… But I am just pasting a little tid-bit of info that you may find useful, but don’t just take my word for it, feel free to research it for yourself. Have a blessed Holiday Season…

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is generally well tolerated. However, high doses may cause headache, nausea or irritability. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: muscle weakness, slow reflexes and confusion, swelling of the feet or ankles, black tar-like stools, coffee-ground vomit. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not use if you are on a sodium restricted diet unless directed by a doctor. Ask a doctor or a pharmacist before use if you are taking a prescription drug. Antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs. Do not administer to children under age 10 without careful consideration. To avoid injury do not take sodium bicarbonate until the powder is completely dissolved and it is very important not to take baking soda when overly full from food or drink. Consult a doctor if severe stomach pain occurs after taking this product.
Sodium bicarbonate side effects can include metabolic alkalosis, edema due to sodium overload, congestive heart failure, hyperosmolar syndrome, hypervolemic hypernatremia, and hypertension due to increased sodium. In patients who consume a high calcium or dairy-rich diet, calcium supplements, or calcium-containing antacids such as calcium carbonate (e.g., Tums), the use of sodium bicarbonate can cause milk-alkali syndrome, which can result in metastatic calcification, kidney stones, and kidney failure.
In rare cases, metabolic alkalosis develops in a person who has ingested too much base from substances such as baking soda (bicarbonate of soda). Severe metabolic alkalosis (ie, blood pH >7.55) is a serious medical problem. Mortality rates have been reported as 45% in patients with an arterial blood pH of 7.55 and 80% when the pH was greater than 7.65 [in emergency medicine, this is a very difficult condition in which to treat]
Administration of sodium bicarbonate in amounts that exceed the capacity of the kidneys to excrete this excess bicarbonate may cause metabolic alkalosis. This capacity is reduced when a reduction in filtered bicarbonate occurs, as observed in renal failure, or when enhanced tubular reabsorption of bicarbonate occurs, as observed in volume depletion.[1]

You will not find what is considered to be an overdose amount of sodium bicarbonate [primarily because of legal and safety aspects of doing so… for purposes that some may understand] and the fact that these things can either be tolerated well in some people, and in others, the slightest amount can have some to severe reactions. Just keep that in mind.

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this, I really appreciate it. I will edit the post to direct people to read your comment so they know more about the risks. Thank you!

    2. Oh that was very well said! I am learning about all of this information in nursing school at the moment. It is extremely important to keep the bodies chemistry balanced or it can lead to severe health problems! Thanks for sharing that wonderful piece of education with all of us!

    3. Thank you for mentioning this, I thought I’d scroll down and read the comments before putting my 2 cents worth in. Now, I don’t have to!

    4. I read somewhere I dk if it’ll work for uti but I kn for bladder infection. But Alka seltzer works instant for its great I tried it wow wha a differences so just throwing it out there I would think b samething as baking soda guess wouldnt hurt……

    5. TY for posting this bc I was going to go research and see if I would be able to try it. I’m disabled and a you probably know we have our share of UTI more frequently than others because we can’t get to the bathroom. I’m allergic to sulfa and bactrim which is in everything they give you if when you get a UTI and I take so much cipro they’re afraid my body will become use to it and no longer work anymore. Why I’m here to find out an alternative. I already take 1000mg of cranberry supplement a day like clockwork. Drink literally a gallon of water a day and rarely if ever, drink cokes. They’re “treats” instead of the usual thing I drink like I did in the past. Was it Marilyn Monroe who said getting older ain’t for sissies? Whoever it was, they were right about that! Thanks again for your post! Instead of looking on the net when I see my doc I’ll ask her if she’d be opposed to me doing this. TY both actually for your info bc I REALLY needed an alternative! If you are still trucking, come through Canton, MS and stop by and say hello sometime. Our truck stops are only a few years old and yeah I know exactly what you mean because that’s the only place I would ever stop when I travel! (My uncle was in the same business lol) Some places were a little scary but they were all clean everywhere we stopped from here to Vegas!

      1. Carrie, thank you for taking the time to write those comments. I hope you find a good alternative here. I think one of the main problems with modern medicine is that trying to fix one thing with medicine causes so many other side effects that most of the time the doctors don’t even mention. People take pills to help with joint pain and the next week suddenly they have digestion problems. They don’t even think to connect one to the other and doctors won’t mention it, instead, they just give you another medicine to “fix” the digestion problems. It goes on and on and people end up taking so many pills every day. It’s bad. I think that each of us needs to take more responsibility and actually research ourselves before and after you go to the doctor. You know your body better than anyone else, you can find a solution to most of your problems yourself.

    6. It’s great to use caution with anything. But seriously, were in a prescription drug worshiping society and I can’t help but roll on the floor laughing at how ridiculous the medical community acts over natural remedies. And the disclosures these bloggers are forced to write. It’s so darn frustrating. “Please use caution with baking soda (like anyone could stand more than a bit, it’s disgusting) but by all means load your body up with any and all Pharma chemicals the doctor can throw at you, and while you’re at it, inject yourself and newborns and kids with known neurotoxins and call it healthy”. Please!!! I’ll take God’s remedies over Pharma’s witches brews any day. Thanks to the blogger for this great article.

    1. You are right, we should have. Especially for night time. I remember waking up at night and needing to wake my husband so he can walk to the restrooms at the truck stop with me. I didn’t feel safe to go by myself in the middle of the night in some locations.

  13. Hi Lee,
For years, when I was much younger, I suffered from chronic UTI’s. My urologist prescribed daily antibiotics as a preventive measure at that time and I took them for a couple of years. Little did I know how harmful long term antibiotic use could be! It makes me cringe just to think of it, so I am delighted that you shared this simple, natural DIY remedy for preventing UTI’s with us at the Healthy Happy Green and Natural Party.I’m pinning and sharing.

    1. I get so mad just thinking about a doctor prescribing antibiotics like that! I don’t understand why doctors don’t try to find a natural solution before prescribing medicine. I think every doctor HAS to be a herbalist and learn natural medicine as part of their education… But medicine those days is first of all a business and this idea won’t support the business model 🙁

      1. The FDA has made it against the law for anyone with a medical license to advocate anything as a cure unless it is a prescribed drug. MDs are not taught any of this in school. Neither are pharmacists. I have 3 in my family and they look at me cross-eyed when I start talking about natural medicine. The money is not in the cure, it’s in the continued treatment. They found that out when they cured polio way back when. The powers that be decided that would never happen again. It’s up to us to educate ourselves.

      2. I took 4 years of pharmacy and this is absolutely truth. Natural remedies are not taught interactions and side effects are taught. If you want to get freaked out about how easily prescribed antibiotics are you might freak out on how many homeopathic doctors lives are at risk or have been murdered. Then if you also really look into it the Rothschilds family owns EVERY SINGLE pharmaceutical company. They are only out for their own personal gain and interest. They’re also the ones that ONLY eat organic and choose alternative healthcare while pumping is full of GMOs and pharmaceuticals. It’s kind of like that guy on national TV claiming the roundup is so safe you should drink it and then they asked him to drink a glass of it and he bout s*** his pants and left the interview. My own pharmacology professor told me 90% of medications out there are absolutely unnecessary. There are some that are very useful most are not.

      3. I was prescribed a medication for seizures that robbed almost all the potassium out of my body and nearly killed me. I have a brain disorder but should never have been put on that medicine bc I’ve NEVER HAD A SEIZURE IN MY LIFE! Instead my new Dr increased the dose age of a med I’ve been on for 15-20 yrs that’s now genetic. The other one wasn’t. It’s ALL about money not the patients! You’re preaching to the choir because I truly feel like I’d be dead right now had I continued to take that medicine and not seek another docs opinion!I have a new doc now

      4. Please share the name of that drug. I am on one that is awful because I was diagnosed with Glioblastoma it’s called keppra interested if this is the same drug. I hate this drug but unfortunately I have had two gran mal seizures and they were worse but if there is another drug I could take for prevention of the seizures i would love to know about it, I’m also on dexamethasone 12mg a day and it caused high blood sugars that in turn keep me with it is.

      5. Sally Harclerode

MixPotCit is a fluid that every pharmacist anywhere in the world knows how to make.
It stands for mixture of Potassium Citrate which will abort an attack of cystitis if you can get to a pharmacist quickly enough. When you are ‘out & about’ and not able to grab baking soda & cranberry juice this is a life saver. And you always get a sympathetic smile from the pharmacist when you ask for this!

      6. Not to be rude, but that is incorrect information. I am a pharmacy student and we learn so much about natural products that you wouldn’t believe. We are tested extensively on them. The problem with natural products is that some work, however most do not have adequate studies showing who they are safe in, the quality of the products, etc. We recommend antibiotics and FDA approved over the counter products because they have been extensively studied and at least we DO know the risks associated with their use. The same cannot be said for most natural products. Moreover, for several natural products that have been studied, use for certain medicinal ailments has been shown innefective. Kidney infections are very serious, it’s a choice to use something known to kill bacteria vs something that will be ineffective and possibly cause subsequent, permenant complications. Anyway, there’s my two cents.

      7. REally So the antibiotics I’ve been prescribed over my lifetime and consumed exactly as prescribed, were tested and were known they would eventually not work on any UTI and make me totally auto immune and antibiotic resistant. UTI being only recent on a lifelong list of allergies bronchitis pneumonia diabetes kidney failure transplantation…oh yeah I’m a miracle of modern medicine and believe me Im greatful to be here. But I wish the medical world could at least recommended the treatment for restoring the gut system..

      8. ALL OF YOU ARE SOMEWHAT CORRECT. MY HUSBAND HAS AN INDWELLING CATHETER AND HAS A CONSTANT BLADDER INFECTION. IN ORDER TO PREVENT A SERIOUS UTI, I USE NATURAL REMEDIES BUT, I ALWAYS HAVE HIS URINE CHECKED IN CASE IT GETS OUT OF HAND. I HAVE USED BAKING SODA BUT, IT CAN BE DANGEROUS. NOW I USE D-MANNOSE, CONCENTRATED CRANBERRY JUICE AND BROMELAIN. ALL OF THESE ARE NATURAL AND WORK. 1tbls. of D-mannose, 2-3oz. of Organic Concentrated Cranberry Juice (buy online), 1tbls. of Bromelain (from pineapples) IN LOTS OF WATER. THIS WILL HELP BUT, YOU MUST USE ANTIBIOTICS IF IT DOESN’T. ALSO, IF YOU’RE A WOMAN, YOU MUST ALWAYS PEE AFTER SEX NO MATTER WHAT! Before may help also.

      9. Bromelain is what makes your tongue and mouth hurt/burn if you eat too much pineapple. Its a protein/enzyme pineapples. I recently had to look up why my mouth and tongue hurt after I ate fresh pineapple not long ago. Thought I’d share a pinch of my new found info. 🙂

      10. Oh, is that why you get that awkward/odd sensation after eating a bunch of pineapple?? I thought it was me! Thank you so much for posting this info!

      11. Sally Harclerode - London, England.

Bromelain is incredibly good to take to assist the body after swelling has occured.. injury or medically caused as in an operation.

      12. Piewakit… D~mannose is the best cure for my UTIs. Im so glad you know about it too! I tell many people about D~mannose. And, yes, always always pee after sex! I havent had a UTI in 5 years since I started doing that!

      13. I used it three times a day for three days. No more. If by then my UTI didn’t go away I’d go see a doctor. Also, pay attention to your body. If it doesn’t feel right stop right away.

      14. I work in a health food store, and you’re right…D-Mannose has amazing results. Our customers in wheelchair, get life changing results 🙂

      15. So happy to read a reply from someone with an indwelling catheter that has had good results with something natural. My mother has had one for several years now due to mobility issues and her uti’s have gotten so out of control that the regular antibiotics do not work for her. They have to have a home health nurse come out to administer injection antibiotics. I am going to try this with her in hopes that it will help. Thank you for posting about your husband!

      16. I’ve heard pineapple was good for IBS but never knew why. I suffer from IBS as well so TY for the info! Pineapple is my favorite fruit and alot tastier than the tartness of cranberries. Will check into the book. TY again!

      17. so, hundred of years and sometmes thousands of years of successful usage of herbal treatment is not extensive enough testing? and a few years of testing by those that would benefit most from the approval of a drug is? hmm. makes ya think.

      18. Would just like to say that although Your products are studied extensively and fda approved then why are there so many recalls after years of usage on people, when they were deemed safe enough by the fda to be taken in the first place? The side effects are worse then some of the diseases they are prescribed for. I’ve lost an aunt because of an antibiotic that was deemed safe by the fda for a cyst. It took a week and a half for it to destroy her kidneys to the point of being fatal. I’ll stick to my herbs. Thank you

      19. No, thank you! I’ve always tried to take a more natural approach. My twins were 4 mo.premature. So naturally were on every known drug they ever come up with! Ergo, this med for this and that med to counteract this! They were essentially Ginny pigs. One progressed a little faster and was moved to next level in pedi icu and missed the outbreak of RSV. I was able to take the other home right before 1st birthday. I’ve always believed eating unprocessed foods was better then a bunch if words I couldn’t pronounce! Needless to say, I was able to wean him off almost all of his meds before his brother came home a year later. Watching the deference between the two was astounding. Natural is just defiantly the way to go. My sisters son was diagnosed with CP at his six month exam. I had told her three months earlier. I wasn’t a Dr therefore not a God. She’s always been the opposite. Everything box or prepackaged and running to the Dr everytime he got the sniffles for an antibiotic. He is now resistant to antibiotics and has food allergies! (Surprise!) A different Dr was thankfully taking her Dr’s appointment’s while on vaca and referred her to a nutritionist! She now preaches to me about the importance of eating right and natural remedies! Um… duh! My mother still won’t let me smack her! Again thank you! If more if us got up and said “ENOUGH”and legalize hemp oils? There would be no more drug companies. Just harvester’s and extractors!

      20. I am so sorry about your aunt, Annie. It’s so scary because the whole reason organizations like the FDA exist is so we can be sure that things like that don’t happen. Yet, it seems sometimes like you can’t even trust them. Like they are controlled by the big pharmaceutical companies instead of by the well-being of the public.

      21. Don’t be so naïve, the FDA has former Monsanto employees on the payroll. The FDA does not benefit the “well-being of the public”. The only care about the all-mighty dollar. You need to take your health in your own hands go natural when ever possible or our doctors will kill us all! Am I dramatic? Perhaps, but I’m not taking any chances.

      22. Tell me about it. Fibromyalgia was dormant in my body until I was prescribed a medication and that was one of the side effects. Can’t prove it or I’d be sitting on a pile of Big Pharma money! The drug was Diamox. I believe that I would be DEAD had *I* not my doctor, taken myself off of it. There was no reason to have me on that drug in the first place! Who cares as long as they get paid? Hate that happened to your aunt. Wish there was a way to make them pay for everything they’ve ever done to people but I can’t talk about Monsanto on someone else page without being offensive. That’s a really raw nerve y’all are hitting so I’m just shutting up

      23. Ayurveda is a medical system that has been testing it’s remedies for thousands of years. What you said is untrue and biased. This goes for tcm and herbalism. Most of the farm drugs are just cheap replicas with huge side effects.

      24. She did not say for “kidney problems”, and besides she said it worked for her! And she also stated this was a suggestion and in no way was she a doctor! That’s what’s wrong with “big pharma companies” they do not want anyone to find homiopathic cures!

      25. Yeah, yeah, yeah.. the old “there have not been enough studies to prove it works” excuse. ! Funny thing is, they won’t do the studies, or if they do, they don’t use sufficient dosage or time. They don’t want us to delay their money making treatment with our natural treatments. Then, when their drugs either harm us, don’t work, it’s not reported. Have you heard ANYBODY still practicing allopathic medicine admit that Gardicil is far too dangerous to be worth the risk it poses compared to the chance that it MIGHT prevent some cervical cancers but there are more types of cervical cancers it won’t prevent than there are that will.

      26. Hi K,

That is very encouraging what you have said about your education.

I am fortunate to have two close friends, one an MD and the other a teaching RN with a doctorate, both of whom believe in nutrition and many alternative remedies. They have taught me some of them. Both of them were dismayed by their formal education NOT including more nutrition and natural remedies, and told me that medical education today is far too influenced by the pharmaceutical companies. Both friends had to supplement their education to be as smart as they are. Both of them also warn me at times of false natural remedies and I have learned to run new ideas by them first… so you see it goes both ways!

As a child, I was over-proscribed antibiotics and I can’t do them anymore… they start to shut down my kidneys… very dangerous. This is what brought me round to trying natural or dietary remedies first.

I’m discouraged when I do see doctors now. First, the newer doctors don’t seem to be able to diagnose properly anymore… they just look things up on the palm pilots or portable laptops, and in my experience they misdiagnose too frequently (very different from the old doctors’ style). Second, they seem to be proscribing steroids for so many things, particularly when they don’t know what it is. And steroids are not good for us. I have too many elderly friends on them and they tell me what its done to their health and digestion, and even they joke about their mental health because of it. It seems like doctors today want to use the equivalent of a nuclear warhead on every little thing. I’m sick of being proscribed steroids for things that calamine lotion can cure (this happened to me, and by the way, the steroids didn’t cure it).

We do need to be careful of some natural remedies, too. All I can suggest is to research really well, and ask a doctor or pharmacist if you have a knowledgeable one handy, who has been able to learn nutrition and alternative remedies.

      27. I recently heard a report (from Dr Oz ,I think) that most doctors only receive about 23 hours of instruction about nutrition & natural treatments in all of their years of schooling. So no wonder they don’t recommend natural cures —- they don’t know about them. Besides, they have Big Pharmacy goading them to push the antibiotics.

      28. I am not sure why we think Dr. know it all. The fact is, a Dr. can be really knowledgeable in one area but not know much about another. They only specialize in one area of medicine and I think both the schools and the hospital/practices are driven by the pharmaceutical industry, so they most likely are not going to spend much time in the natural medicine department.

      29. Don’t believe everything Dr Oz tells you. He’s a good heart and lung doctor but Lee is correct, he can’t know everything. One doctor doesn’t know everything about the entire human body that’s why we have specialized medicine. The “family” doctors are pretty soon going to be a thing of the past as more people use tele medicine. I used it for a UTI and never went to the doctor but they just wouldn’t get the message that I needed cipro and can diagnose myself with UTI better than they can. Had to go sit in a docs office a week later and illbedam if I wasn’t right! A bottle of cipro later and I was much better. I’m allergic to everything that they usually prescribe but nobody listens to the patient anymore

      30. A doctor friend of mine said only received 3 hours of nutritional instruction was required at her medical college. THREE. Hell, I’ve had more than three hours of it and i’m not a doctor!

      31. I wish they would learn to first suggest natural remedies and if those don’t work then go to the chemicals. I agree with your other comment too… I also think that medicine today is influenced way too much by the pharmaceutical companies.

      32. Big Pharma hun, that is what it is all about. I get put on meds then more meds for the side effects. It never ends and I feel worse than ever.

      33. Anymore the requirement for a Doctor is just one Health class in his entire 6-8yrs of school!!! Can you believe it?!!

      34. Medical schools and doctor and pharmacist continuing education are funded by the pharmaceutical companies. These companies control what is taught and it won’t be something natural that cures problems, for sure!

  14. I had never thought about using baking soda. You can bet that I’m going to give this a try. I do use apple cider vinegar but that doesn’t always take care of it. Thank you for sharing.

    1. It’s so simple! When I discovered this trick I was actually mad at doctors for not telling people to try this before they give antibiotics.
      Thanks for visiting!

      1. Then they wouldn’t make money or meet their quota with big pharm.. I’m so excited to get into homeopathic medicine for reasons just like this. Thank you for the share <3

      2. PLEASE do not waste your time with “homeopathy”! Not all natural medicine is homeopathy. This treatment is NOT homeopathy. Go read the Wiki about it.

There are much better, longer-tested natural medicine systems out there, such as Ayurveda, TCM, or other “folk” systems.

Homeopathy was created by one German man in the 1700’s. That CANNOT COMPARE to systems of natural medicine that have been used and tested for CENTURIES!

Please, I hope you look into this further and don’t waste your time and money learning an inferior system, when you could have learned a much better-tested one, for the same investment of time and effort.

Learn one with a HISTORY of use among people.

Hope that helps, and sorry if it comes off as so judgemental. I just hate to see people confuse these terms. Homeopathy is a specific system, not a synonym for “natural medicine”.

      3. For a while I subscribed to a newsletter from Dr Susan Lark who specializes in women’s health. Her opinion was that women’s systems are generaly too acidic. She recommends taking 1/8 to 1/4 tsp baking soda in 1/2 glass of water daily to maintain proper balance. I take it whenever I have eaten too much or have heartburn. So taking it for a UTI seems reasonable to me.

      4. Oh wow. Thanks for sharing this. I don’t take it daily but when I feel infection coming my way I take it right away. Always helps.

      5. Don’t know about homeopathy, folk medicine, natural medicine or whatever hoodoo voodoo you want to call it from Adam! What I DO know is that taking cranberry DOES work and I don’t have UTIs anymore like I use to. I’ve never put baking soda in it but I drink it every day and it works!

      6. Your ignorance shows! Hope this person doesn’t heed your bad advice. Homeopathy is great. The queen of England’s whole family uses it. She can afford anyone she wants and yet uses Homeopathy.

      7. I think it’s YOUR ignorance that shows? If the Queen jumped off a cliff you’d probably copy her.

      8. I suffer from Ms so Ito is part and. Parcel. I became immune to antibiotics apart from 2 so bicarbonate and apple cider work jolly great with me. Rule is Don’t think about the taste think about the benefit

      9. Did you try it? if not well…..and why is it a waste of time? anything if it works or helps is better than Antibiotics

      10. Antibiotics can make you really sick! I got c-difficile from antibiotics, spent ten days in isolation in the hospital. A year later I was diagnosed with severe Crohn’s disease. Now I’m on a monthly infusion of inflectra to control the Crohn’s and will have to be on it for the rest of my life unless i want to end up with a colostomy bag. The inflectra combined with is a biological immunosuppressant. Yeah, great, so now I’m immunosuppressed too!

      11. I am sorry Sandy, it doesn’t sound fun at all. Look into natural remedies. I use doTERRA essential oils and they really changed my life. I’ll be happy to try to help you figure out alternatives. Email me if you are interested.

      12. Lee im interested in knowing more of the “T” essential oils, so tired of all medical processes…etc, theres gottaBa better way!!
thanks, what are they whats the benefits, how to purchase all details would help…thanks in advance what part of nc are you my son and wife w two girls live in cary nc…

      13. My Mom got C DIff from two antibiotics they prescribed at the hospital when she presented with a UTI and diverticulitis.. The antibiotic for the diverticulitis was the same antibiotic used for the C DIff. so that tells me the antibiotic Cipro was the culprit.. She spent 5 months trying to get rid of it.. She is 96 so it could have easily killed her.. Cipro seems to the be the antibiotic of choice for C Diff.. She could have taken the one she usually took Amoxicillin.. Never had a problem with it..

      14. I’ve heard of many people having complications because of antibiotics. One of the reasons why I try to stay away from it the best I can.

      15. I am on my second day of the soda treatment and I don’t notice much difference. If I haven’t gotten rid of the burning sensation when I urinate or the smell or the back pain should I go for 5 days?

      16. Homeopathy really helped my daughter’s frequent ear infections. It’s an art and you need to find the right doctor. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. Our modern prescriptions aren’t the greatest solution with all their side effects.

      17. My grandbaby can’t get rid of her ear infections and they are wanting to do tubs. What did you use? I’d like them to try the natural ways first.

      18. could you tell me which one? I know they are using some – but want to make sure they don’t miss something

      19. I just came across this post & reading comments. I love EO’s for many things! Also, my youngest son battled almost continual ear infections for his first 1 1/2 years. Was scheduled for tubes to be inserted through surgery when circumstances led to me allowing my chiropractor to begin gentle adjustments 3 x a week. Within 1st week, fluid drained from ears on its own. And no more infections. With that success, he also began adjusting my middle child who, at 2 1/2, was already on weekly allergy shots. In less than a month, we were able to end his weekly allergy shots. When the nerves that provide function to areas of the body are impinged, function in those body parts are not as they should be (kind of like pinching or cutting off electric between the breaker panel & the house outlet – not getting the flow of energy needed to make things work properly). I don’t know if you’ll still see this comment since so much time has passed, but thought still worth sharing.

      20. Thanks for taking the time to write this, Gayle! I hope Teresa will see it but anyway great tips for the rest of us!

      21. Oh honey! Calm down. You are coming off very judgemental. If you don’t like what you read, please see your way out. You are being a troll. It’s not nice and extremely unfair of you to treat others this way. We each have our own journey of learning and discovery. What you said will probably turn more off of learning about traditional eastern medicine than being persuaded to try it.

      22. It’s great that you have a little more experience and insight on other options, but you could have been a little more polite. You could have acknowledged this approach and added yours. Which also sounds great.

      23. Alicia, our family has also been cured of illness countless times using Homeopathic medical treatment. It takes a level of study and careful choice of the correct homeopthic remedy, but once we arrive at the matching one, wow, the cure is amazing! I’m so glad you’ve been blessed using this excellent, and well-proven natural medicine! I love homeopathy and thank God for it! [Thankful for this UTI info, too, and will definitely add it to my repertory of complementary natural treatments for myself, and then, once trusted, for my family!]

      24. Do you know of a homemade recipe for making one’s own Quinine water, instead of store bought ‘Tonic Water’ or the common leg cramp pills that cost so much? I haven’t found a safe recipe online for using the herb quinine comes from. I don’t want to risk taking/having too much and getting those awful side effects.

      25. I gotta say I don’t care what it’s called. For 3 weeks I’ve been in torment passing kidney stones due to the side effect of a medication I have to take due to 3 brain surgeries and a incurable rare illness of the brain. Now I have a UTI, looked it up tried the baking soda I had relief in 15 20 min. No antibiotic has done that for me. I usually wind up w a yeast infection. So THANK YOU, GOD BLESS YOU AND PASS IT ON. I know I will.???

      26. Try fresh lemon juice and olive oil. I used about a shot glass full of the mix two times a day until they passed. Lemon juice can sometimes disolve the stones and the oil helps them pass.

    2. You can actually kill yourself if you cannot relieve the gas from the baking soda. Plain ole cranberry juice, or cran grape, crab apple, crab cherry will do same thing, obviously straight cranberry juice is the best but, I don’t like it because it is bitter, so I mix with 7 up, sprite, Sierra most or even ginger ale in a pinch.

      1. The cranberry juice is great, but if it has sugar, it will feed the infection. I recommend using pure unsweetened juice and if that is un drinkable for you, mix it with sugar free 7up. Good luck!

      2. Hi Christy, you can also drink the natural cranberry capsule, one every day. Try and get the highes mg

      3. You’re wrong. Plain old cran (anything) juice DOES NOT work the same…
It DOES NOT give you instant relief or relief in 15-20 min.

      4. I have been plagued with UTIs for months. I have tried cranberry juice and cranberry capsules. They had no effect at all. I am going to try the Soda thing. I am in the UK and I am not sure what you mean by “Baking Soda” but I think it is the same thing that we call “Bicarbonate of Soda”

I will say in a couple of days how it is going.

      5. hi Antony,

Lee is correct. It is called bicarbonate of soda in the U.K.

        And hi everyone,

I have tried cranberry capsules to avoid the sugar in cranberry juice, because in my experience, yes, sugar feeds the infection. I find that cranberry does work, but it takes a while, and unfortunately cranberry pills tend to constipate me. The “cure” is sometimes very uncomfortable, which is why I’m looking for alternatives.

In the mean time I have been finding that the combination of drinking LOTS of water and eating an alkaline diet helps quite a bit. In other words, I go off sugar and most if not all starches for a while, and instead have a lot of dark leafy greens, vegetables, nuts, fish, and other foods. This should also be able to help yeast infections and some other ailments, and it may be why some folk are finding bicarbonate of soda to help, as that would help the body be more alkaline.

The drawback to this remedy is you have to be disciplined to stick to alkalizing foods, and I’m not always disciplined. 🙂

    3. Want to share you my real experience. I had once a relative who was in a severe stomach pain/ulcer ,too thin can not even touch solid foods, taking endless meds and almost dying. One day my grandma, out of desperation mix baking POWDER and water let him drink it, that very moment he said the pain was slightly gone and he slept soundly at nighy. he continued taking the mixture 3X a day, less than a month he can already eat solids! His health is now back to normal… the rest is history. Now, i wonder what is it in b. powder ’til i read about your baking soda post. So baking powder has baking soda in it, the one who is doing the trick. Thanks for sharing.God bless!

    4. I couldn’t swallow baking soda… Lol but good for you that is a cheap fix if it works for you.. I have been getting them since I was 16 y/o now 45…. Same then in and out of doctor’s having to rebalance my body after.. Ughh I use D-mannose a supplement found in berries and gets rid of it quick it attaches to the bacteria and flushes out of your body .. Saved me so much on antibiotics. Get it at the health food store as soon as I feel on coming .. truly a lifesaver for me!

      1. Yes, a lot of people suggested D-mannose in the comments, I’ve never known about it until I wrote this post.
