In this post, I’ll show you how to get rid of a UTI without antibiotics. This is such an easy trick! I wish I had known it years ago. It’s all about changing the pH in our urinary system and it’s a super easy thing to do with ingredients you probably already have on hand. If you are struggling with a painful UTI that keeps coming back, read this how to get rid of a UTI without going to the doctor article! I am sure it will help you. Also, make sure to check the comment section below for many more suggestions from other readers like Alka Zeltzer for UTI.

I used to be a truck driver. My ex-husband and I owned an eighteen wheeler and drove all over the US and Canada. We lived on the road for two years.

It was a great adventure. First, it certainly teaches you a thing or two about yourself and your spouse. Not to mention it puts your relationship to the test, living in a rolling box with one twin bed and that’s pretty much it (we enjoyed that adventure but obviously our relationship didn’t last…).

Second, it was a lot of fun spending each day in a different place. Moving around. Exploring, meeting new and interesting people.

I just wish we’d had a working toilet in the truck.

One thing I do not miss is gas station restrooms. Imagine using only gas station restrooms for two years in a row and not having a decent place to wash off after you do the deed, if you know what I mean… Psheee! I had more urinary tract infections than hairs on my body. And believe me, I have some hair on my body.

OK, this last paragraph was totally disgusting!

Oh well…

Man, I wish I knew this simple (and I mean ridiculously simple…) trick of how to get rid of a UTI without antibiotics back then. Would’ve saved me major pain and discomfort, not to mention gas and time. Can you imagine trying to find a clinic with an eighteen wheeler parking spot.

Yeah, not happening.

Let’s cover the basics for a moment…

What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

UTI is an infection in the bladder.

What Cases a UTI?

UTI is caused by bacteria that travel through the urethra, which is the tube that transfers urine from our bladder to the outside of our body.

Women especially are prone to a UTI because we have a shorter urethra and because the opening of our urethra is close to the anus. Bacteria (such as E. coli) from the large intestine can leave through the anus and find it’s way to the opening of the urethra.

Talk about bad design!

Anyway, this is why we should always clean from front to back after using the restrooms.

If not treated, the infection can spread and reach the kidneys.

What are the Symptoms of UTI?

You can’t miss it. You’ll want to go to the restrooms frequently, even though very little comes out when you are there. When you try to pee, it will burn. Your urine might smell different or have a different color. You might feel tired, shaky, and have back or lower stomach pain. In some cases, you might even have a fever.

How to Get Rid of a UTI Without Antibiotics?

Before I got into natural, homemade medicine, I did what most people do. I ran to the doctor. Time after time after time. I ran to the doctor, and he or she prescribed antibiotics that will kill the bad bacteria. The only problem was that it killed the good bacteria as well, leaving my body exposed to bad bacteria.

The cycle never ended. I had one infection after another.

This little trick here helped me find instant relief from UTI pain and a complete cure within 3 or 4 days without the use of antibiotics! It saved me a trip to the doctor, and I got to keep my good bacteria.

But first, it’s time for the disclaimer…

**I am not a doctor. Nor I will ever be. In this post, I share with you how I cured my UTI without using antibiotics. This way might not be the right way to take care of your particular body. **

So here is what I used:

1 teaspoon of baking soda.

8 oz of water or juice. I used cranberry-grape juice because it is super sweet and helps hide the salty taste of the baking soda a bit.

All I did is mix the baking soda with the juice or water and drink it. I did this three times a day for three days and my UTI was gone. I would have continued another couple of days if it wasn’t gone, but no more than a week (please take the time to read comment number 4 below for additional information about the risks of using baking soda). I felt an almost instant relief in pain by the end of the first day, and by the end of the third day, my body was back to normal.

Baking soda is an alkaline substance. It helps neutralize the acidity of the urine and helps the body fight the infection.

Always try to prevent first. Drink a lot of water, have clean sex and urine right after, wipe from front to back after using the restroom, and avoid irritating feminine products. I also suggest that you make sure to strengthen your immune system naturally by using essential oils. Read more here: How to Boost Your Immune System With Essential Oils.

However, if you find yourself running to the restroom every fifteen minutes and cursing like a sailor when you are there, try this trick. It solved my problem quickly.

  1. Hi!
I’d love to see all the scientific studies you scoured to find this information! For example, the ones demonstrating a change in urine pH after ingesting baking soda (this should be quite easy- it seems like a straightforward study, right?). Of course, the studies demonstrating this change is sufficient to kill ALL the bacteria would be great.

I’m assuming you have that information, of course, because otherwise you’d be pushing snake-oil that could lead to major complications. And of course, you already know that telling someone to stop antibiotics without talking to their physician first is just going to increase the already staggering antibiotic-resistant bacteria issue we’ve got, so I don’t need to remind you of that.

Can’t wait to hear your reply!

    Thanks!

    1. I am sorry to disappoint you Bridget, but there are no studies involved here. As I stated clearly, I am not a doctor. Never studied medicine in a university and probably never will. I share MY personal experience because this is what bloggers do. I don’t tell people what they should do just share what I did that helped me and assume that we are all adults and each person can be mature enough and responsible enough to decide if they want to try something, need to research more about it, or if they need scientific studies to prove it before they go ahead and give it a try.
Again, I am sorry to disappoint you. Maybe you can make your suggestion in how to care for UTI like many others did here in the comments. I think it will be much more healpful.

      1. I hate to be the wet blanket here and I do not want to offend anyone but I must respectfully disagree. Anything with sugar is going to be counterproductive because sugar breeds the infection. Carbonated drinks even if they are sugar free are still very bad for the urinary tract. If you’re going to use unsweetened cranberry juice you can mix it with Stevia. I found the taste to be awful. I was told the recommended dose was to drink 32 oz per day. Thirteen years ago a bottle of unsweetened cranberry juice went for about $8 for 32 oz. and the acid hurt my stomach.

The product I use for UTI’s is called D-Mannose. My chiropractor suggested it for me. He was really into alternative remedies. It is the stuff in cranberry juice that helps UTI’s. It has no drug interactions. At first I bought it from him. $42 would get you enough to probably last through 2 UTI’s. I ended up finding it at a local health food store for $15 a bottle. It’s a little more than that depending on where you get it. There are several health food stores around be who charge in the $30 to $40 range. I usually order it off Amazon or from Swanson Vitamins online. I pay in the $20 range. I often take it once a day if I feel a UTI coming on. I know others who take in once a day as a preventative (this person went from having a standing perscription for antibiotics to not having had a UTI in over a year.

Also it is much cheaper than going to the doctor, buying your antibiotics, taking those for 10 to 14 days…THEN going and buying the treatment for your vaginal yeast infection that was just caused by the medicine you took to get rid of the yeast infection in your urinary tract aka UTI. is sold in two forms: a powder which you mix into a glass of water. If you drink it right away there is almost no taste at all. Let it sit of five minutes it will leave a mild bad taste in your mouth until you take a couple more sips of water. It also comes in pill form. It’s really the same as the powder except it has been put into empty gel caps. I like the pills because they are more portable. There are many brands out there. I have not found any difference between the expensive brands and the cheap ones. It can also be purchased in a gel cap combined with cranberry. I do not like this one. It hurts my stomach due to the acid from the cranberry. The D-Mannose doesn’t bother my stomach at all.

I am not one who buys into the hype of advertising BUT I have been using this for 13 years. This stuff really does work a wonderful as all the claims say it works. After a nasty kidney infection some years before finding D-Mannose my system had always seemed like is was always right on the edge of an infection until I found this. I now keep it in my house all the time as a precaution.

NOW HERE’S THE REALLY INTERESTING PART…I have had 3 different, not associated with each other in any way, MEDICAL doctors tell me they have been recommending it to patients for years! Research it for yourself. Shocking I know but it completely lives up to all the hype!

      2. D-Mannose is what many here suggested. I never heard about it until I wrote this post. To be honest, I don’t have almost any health issues since I started using essential oils to support our health on a regular basis. If I ever have a UTI again I’ll definitely try it. Thanks!

  2. I used to get bladder infections quite often but I haven’t had one in years! The reason, I believe, is because I drink raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar drinks on a daily basis. Anytime I feel that unpleasant tingle, I mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda (Bob’s Red Mill brand) with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 6-8 ounces of water. After the fizzing is done I drink it and I do that about 3 times a day. That “uh oh, I think I’m getting a bladder infection” feeling goes right away and I’m good to go. 🙂 Antibiotics are definitely over-prescribed but they do have their place; they should be a last resort though!

    1. I believe you! Apple cider vinegar can pretty much cure anything… But, god help me, there is no way I am drinking this stuff raw. I envy you for being able to do that.

  3. I had the same issues, chronic UTI’s but didn’t want to keep taking antibiotics because it wasn’t allowing my body to recover. I found another natural option, cream of tartar in water 2-3 times a day. It worked and I haven’t had one since!!

    1. Oh wow. I’ll try it next time. No one mentioned cream of tartar so far. I have it in my house just because I make playdough for the kids with it.

  4. I have tried the baking soda and juice in the past and it didn’t work at all. I had to go to the doctor for antibiotics.

  5. Now that I am diabetic I seem to develop UTIs more frequently, usually when I have overindulged on carbs. My first go-to is unsweetened cranberry juice, about 1/3 cup, several times a day. Since I rather like tart, bitter flavors, the taste is not a problem for me. If you need something sweeter, be careful of the tremendous amount of sugar in juices and sodas. Sugar tends to feed the infection. Instead try diluting your cranberry juice with water and sweetening with stevia.

    1. Thanks for the tip Gigi. I think every woman has to have unsweetened cranberry juice in her diet on a regular basis.

  6. I have a small drink of Cranberry juice every morning, haven’t had a UTI for 4 years until a few weeks ago but thank goodness it was only a mild one compared to what I used to have. I drink the light one straight you get used to the taste after awhile.

  7. i have been drinking cranberry juice every day for YEARS. Always wipe front to back. When I recently got my 1st UTI, I went to the doc & got the antibiotic. Worked, but the UTI has come back off and on. I have the pain when the urge to pee becomes frequent, but very little comes out. Where do I buy the D-manoosh? I’m thinking the same place where I buy pro-biotics? All these comments make me doubt whether I should try b. soda, because I already take strong meds for gerd/acid reflux.

  8. I’ve been experiencing some symptoms so I’m going to try this with cranberry juice plus taking Vitamin C! Hopefully it goes away and I don’t want to go T the doctor. Has anyone used the at home test kits to see if you have a UTI?? I love this remedy and hope it works!! Thanks Lee!

  9. I have found that 8 to 12 cranberry capsules a day, along with 2 teaspoons of D-Mannose powder a day, and lots of water, will knock an active UTI. May take a couple of weeks, but it works.

  10. There is nothing like the impending doom of the realization that a UTI is taking hold! Ugh. I can’t say thanks enough to you for sharing your experience and this information!!! I tried the baking soda in can – grape juice earlier this week when symptoms first started! By morning all was well. Thanks again!!

    1. Awesome! I am happy it helped. Just drink some cranberry juice now for the next few days to make sure it is really gone.

  11. Hi I have been reading all the comments. Its interesting to see there are a few options for relief. Several years ago i was getting Uti’s constantly. The doctor prescribed antibiotics. I was so desperate to stop taking them I decided to research. D-mannose is a product i keep in my meducine cupboard in emergency, but i have found that all I need to do is eat an alkaline diet.
Plenty of raw green food. Eating less acidic foods and eating more alkaline foods have stopped the UTI’s for me.

  12. I found your article around 2am, while searching for natural remedies for UTI’s as I couldn’t sleep with the pain and couldn’t take extra time off for a doctor’s visit, nor am I a fan of antibiotics.
I went to the kitchen and whipped up a baking soda, apple cider vinegar and apple juice mix and felt better within the hour! This morning I picked-up some organic cranberry-blueberry pure juice to drink and mix with baking soda 3x a day. Since I am breastfeeding the more natural the better.
    THANK YOU!!

    1. I am so happy to hear this! Thanks for taking the time to write this. I hope it’s completely goes away in a few days.

      1. I remember when I was little and had an upset stomach, my mom would give me baking soda in water to help me feel better, it worked. I never knew about baking soda for a UTI. I have a question, I have high blood pressure now, can I still take the baking soda?

      2. Hi Rosie,
From what I’ve read, baking soda can cause a rise in blood pressure, but I really didn’t research much about this. You can try to Google “high blood pressure and baking soda” and see what you get.

  13. ACV-After dealing with cannida and bladder infections for 20 years, I googled it up on the internet. Apple cider vinegar unpasturized with mother in it sounded the best. I took 1 teaspoon every hour until I felt better, about 6 hours. I have been taking 1 teaspoon a day in a glass of water and have not had an infection in at least 6 years. It’s all about the PH. Most of the foods we eat are acid-meat, sugar, wheat, sodas, etc. Vinegar and lemon are alkaline and change the body to alkaline. I wish I had know this years age. I hope this helps someone.

    1. Thanks for the tip. Apple cider vinegar is another one of those magical things that can cure about a million things. My only problem is that I can’t stand the taste or the smell. I have to find a solution to that. Maybe mix it with a strong juice.

  14. I have not tried any of these. But will keep them in mind for future reference. I am under the covers giggling, reading this, trying not to wake my husband up. Too funny. We women are funny creatures.

  15. I write this curled over, on the toilet. The intermittent trickle of tears in perfect syncrony with the pathetic squirts of pee. I’ll even try that d-manoose 😉
I’m about to try baking soda and tons-o-water(because I have it on hand) but will defiantly follow the advice and invest in d-mannose. Thanks for all the tips!

    1. Oh dear God! You made me laugh so hard but I feel so bad laughing cause I know your pain, my friend! Try the baking soda for three days and come back to tell me how you feel. I hope you get relief soon.
